Borough of West Chester Reduces Costs and Improves Resiliency With a Hybrid-Cloud Solution
The Borough of West Chester strives to provide fundamental services in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Everything from public safety, libraries and police departments are catered through the Borough of West Chester.
William Mann has been with the Borough of West Chester 28 plus years in numerous capacities, including police dispatcher and, most recently, as the certified Government Chief Information Officer. Now, Mann’s primary focus is on the information technology infrastructure that keeps services to the county working. His responsibilities include managing an IT infrastructure consisting of two terabytes of data, 10 Windows servers and 75 workstations across four buildings. He also manages all smart phones for more than 100 full-time employees and elected officials. Many of the servers have critical applications, like iCop Video, iRecord for interviews and Websense. One of his main concerns is to ensure the data and applications are always on and available to employees. Downtime and IT interruptions are not an option.
Last Call for Tape Backup
When it came to backup and disaster recovery, Borough of West Chester was still using legacy methods. Its system consisted of backups to tape that were rotated on a three-week cycle and Intronis for cloud backup.
“The Intronis solution was a bit spotty, the cloud backup was not completely seamless and I was not very happy with the process,” said Mann. “For as many hours as we spent setting up the solution and maintaining it you would expect the solution to be stable and reliable and for the backup jobs to be successful. That just wasn’t the case.”
As the complications continued to mount, Mann started to consider alternate options for West Chester’s backup and disaster recovery needs. “It reached a point where I was spending too much time managing a solution that wasn’t providing complete protection,” said Mann. “I needed to get away from tape and I needed something reliable that could provide us true business continuity.”
Coincidentally, as Mann started to investigate alternatives, Fraser AIS, a trusted IT services provider told him about a hybrid-cloud solution called Axcient. Mann said he was immediately impressed by Axcient’s ability to protect his servers, data, and allow for remote access when needed.
“Axcient is a powerfully simple alternative to what we were using at the time,” Mann said. “Axcient’s capability to provide both onsite and offsite data and application protection was a huge decision making factor for me. We replaced both tape and Intronis with Axcient’s single integrated solution, which dramatically reduced our total cost of ownership. The thing about an IT interruption or disaster is that you run the risk of losing everything and potentially thousands of dollars. However, with Axcient, if your entire IT infrastructure goes down, you’re still up and running thanks to an instant failover to the cloud.”
Great Customer Support and Easy Maintenance
Fraser and West Chester have a great client/vendor relationship. Fraser’s level of support and trust makes it really easy for Mann to rely on them for their IT needs and for any technical questions related to the Axcient solution.
“There are three things I look for in a relationship with solution providers,” said Mann. “Are they easy to communicate with and available? Are they able to answer your questions? Do you trust them on having your interests in mind? Trust is a key component and a big reason why we continue to work with Fraser AIS as our IT services provider of choice.”
When Axcient was implemented at the Borough of West Chester, the solution was quickly up and running and Mann saw immediate benefits when he had to quickly restore deleted files and folders.
“Axcient is easy, and I am very comfortable using the solution. Anyone can set it up and master it quickly. When files or folders get deleted or become corrupted, Axcient saves the day every time.”
