The Challenge

Datasafe is a recognized and trusted name in Records and Information Management Services. Founded in 1946, Datasafe provides for the systematic control of records throughout its lifecycle. Datasafe helps its customers identify, organize, maintain and access needed information, and properly dispose of the rest, while realizing the benefits of cost savings, efficiency, regulatory compliance, and reduced litigation risk.

The company is dedicated to creating extraordinary value in information management solutions. In 2010, the company saw a trend among its small-to-medium business (SMB) customers toward cloud-based backup and disaster recovery services. As a complement to its existing services, Datasafe partnered with a reseller of cloud-based backup. The logistics of the relationship were challenging – no direct relationship with the manufacturer, no common vision revisions, no flexibility with pricing the solution, and support was limited at best.

That’s when Datasafe’s Director of IT, Jose Moreno, discovered Axcient. The company had done a review of customers who had purchased cloud-based backup services and found that many of them were happily using Axcient.

The Solution

“Our clients are trending toward tape alternatives, either disk-to-disk or straight cloud for increased efficiencies and peace of mind,” said Moreno. “Axcient delivers an alternative that is a great fit for our clients.”

The solution itself fits nicely with the structure of Datasafe’s service offering. Datasafe’s strategy is to direct all mission-critical information to the cloud, and everything else to tape – and now to the hybrid Axcient solution. Using the onsite appliance gives customers faster access to their information than tape, and secure offsite replication to the cloud provides instant access to mission-critical information in the event
of a disaster.

While many of Datasafe’s clients still use tape for retention, Axcient fills a need that tapes can’t. “With Axcient our clients can do a bare metal restore and you can’t put a price tag on that. It’s a huge benefit,” said Moreno. “Clients don’t understand the value until they have to do a big restore. But we do and that’s one of the things we value about the Axcient solution.”
