The Answer to Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery
Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery go hand-in-hand, and while these two seem like interchangeable concepts with similar procedures, there are distinctions.
Business Continuity offers a wide array of processes that primarily serve to uphold the essential functions of a business during and after a disaster. An effective BC plan, for example, should enable an enterprise to resume operations in the midst of a cyber-attack. And at the very least, it should mitigate the damage if it is unable to resume system functionality. This is how assessment allows an organization to anticipate risks that can influence client satisfaction and consumer journey, which then enables the following:
- Minimize the impact of downtime
- Ensure that the staff and stakeholders stay safe and the operations legal
- Provide situational awareness and lessons
- Be part of the company’s culture where roles are strategically delegated
Disaster Recovery includes the measures and procedures taken to recover one or more applications and IT services during and after an emergency. A data breach, for example, has already occurred before a DR plan can be executed. A detailed DR plan, for instance, functions as part of the BCM Framework, which should secure all key business processes. There should be a precise approach to be taken, as defined in the DR plan, which also enables the POC or dedicated personnel to:
- Mine and obtain the data needed to start the response and regain control
- Save critical time during an emergency
- Resume regular business and recover vital records
- Communicate effectively with employees, suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders
- Organize the staff and assign roles to solve the problem efficiently and effectively
Given these, the importance of a BC/DR policy increases as the threats of a cyber-attack multiply and the tolerance for downtime diminishes. An effective BC/DR plan enables an enterprise to successfully resume system operations, and this is where we come into play. For a multilayered and comprehensive coverage, Axcient Replibit is the ultimate solution that offers you the following benefits:
Data loss is often fatal. One study showed that 60 percent of small and medium size businesses (SMBs) that lose their data will shut down within six months.
New requirements from cloud, security, and compliance mean SMBs must choose the right business continuity solution. Businesses without cloud recovery can be significantly impacted by natural disasters such as fires and flooding when physical access is not possible. In addition, on premise hardware failures and accidental deletion by employees impact productivity.
Small businesses who invest in security software can never be 100% protected, so it is critical companies have business continuity as a last line of defense to recover data. 43% of cyber-attacks target small businesses and 60% of businesses who are successfully attacked are out of business within six months. For companies operating in regulated industries, compliance and data privacy are becoming more important due to new laws and increased enforcement by federal and state governments. Fines can be significant which wipe out any profits. Data protection is required by most data privacy and security legislation, including HIPAA and GDPR.
Axcient helps companies keep employees productive, IT systems running, and data always accessible.
Axcient Replibit is an image-based backup and disaster recovery service that captures snapshots of a server every few minutes, including its data, operating system, applications, and configurations and replicates those images to the Axcient Cloud. Businesses that deploy Replibit have local BDR appliance and cloud recovery options in the event of a server failure or site-wide disaster, using the Axcient Cloud.
- Proprietary image-based backup software

BREAK THE CHAINS
Axcient Business Continuity provides the industry’s only chain-free image backup solution, which means there is no backup chain dependency. Most BDR solutions depend on chains where each new scheduled backup is added as a sequential chain after the initial full backup image. In other words, each new recovery point is dependent on the prior recovery point.
Like any physical chain, damage to any chain link compromises the integrity of its entirety. A deletion or corruption of any one of these recovery points makes future recovery points useless. Axcient’s proprietary chain-free technology makes each recovery point independent, verified, and bootable. There are several benefits to going chain free: more efficient use of storage, greater reliability and confidence in every backup even if corruption does occur, and there is never any need to perform time consuming reseeding.
Replibit’s storage efficiency is 30% greater than other BDR solutions which reduces cost. Many BDR solutions recommend time-consuming reseeding annually in case of corruption, with Axcient Business Continuity that is no longer necessary.
CHOICE AND FLEXIBILITY
Axcient is unique in providing our partners the greatest choice and flexibility. MSPs and their SMB clients can BYOD and BYOC. BYOD or “Bring Your Own Device” means Axcient partners can build or repurpose their own hardware for use as a local BDR appliance or purchase a turn-key hardware and software bundle from Axcient. Partners can purchase hardware outright or enroll in the Axcient hardware leasing program.
BYOC or “Bring Your Own Cloud” means Axcient partners can use the Axcient Cloud or provide their own cloud through their own data center or do both to retain multiple offsite copies of critical data. This choice and flexibility give partners the ability to design the best service for their clients to support optimal Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and client Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Depending on SMB client requirements and industry specific use cases, this level of choice and flexibility can be critical for effective data protection.
SECURITY & COMPLIANCE
A vendor is nothing without the health of their security program, cloud and infrastructure. SecurityScorecard, an independent 3rd party, has scored the Axcient ecosystem of applications and the Axcient Cloud at an “A” rating. This makes Axcient the highest scored business continuity solution in the industry. This scoring was attained through thorough testing of ten security risk factors which afford visibility into the cyberhealth of the Axcient ecosystem. These ten risk factors are: network security, DNS health, patching cadence, endpoint security, IP reputation, application security, Cubit score, hacker chatter, information leakage, and social engineering.
The Cubit score is an indicator of a security program’s maturity through implementation of best practices. “Hacker chatter” refers to information on the dark web that speaks to a past or existing compromise. The Axcient security team works around the clock to constantly test and improve both our application and cloud security.
MSP PARTNER NETWORK
Axcient works exclusively with Managed Service Providers (MSPs) so SMBs get the best service. MSPs provide a high touch managed service backed by a comprehensive SLA so SMBs don’t have to worry about IT or their data but can focus on their core business. Axcient provides our MSP partner network the best software solutions and support. That support includes our Business Availability Portal for management of all Axcient products, billing, support tickets, and marketing information. In addition, Axcient works closely with our partners on product roadmap development and training, product support, and sales and marketing assistance.
Our support SLA is 24/7/365 with a less than 60-minute response time for critical issues. Our support organization works closely with product engineering to ensure fast response and resolution times. By providing MSPs the best partner experience, that in turn means SMBs get the data protection they need without the additional overhead or worry.
To further understand the importance of having a policy for Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery, one has to highlight the primary distinctions between BC and DR, which can be found in their respective focal points.
BC, in general, zooms in on the organization, while DR focuses more on the organization’s technological infrastructure. As a phase in the grand picture of business continuity planning, DR’s significance lies in the organization’s capacity to access the system and its data without any massive delay right after a disaster has occurred. BC takes this into account, but at the same time, it also has risk management and a myriad of damage control plans for any untoward incidents.
Their similarities, however, are most apparent in their methodologies. Both concepts involve forecasting incidents such as cyber-attacks and natural disasters, such as earthquakes or fires, and at times, even human error. BC and DR also share the crux of ensuring the smooth and seamless operations of the business at best, and mitigating issues and problems at the very least. Mission-critical applications and processes have to be functioning at all times, and Axcient Replibit guarantees round-the-clock support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
What’s in a BC/DR Policy?
MSPs, IT managers, and CIOs understand that, should calamities strike, the bulk of the responsibilities and accountability rest on their shoulders. They must create an executable, clear-cut BC/DR plan, have the appropriate bandwidth and resources ready to implement it, and continuously refine it. Organizations count on their strategies to succeed, and for them to have contingency plans set in place. But all these take a lot of time, effort, and money – and committing less than what’s expected can be fatal.
For this reason, organizations turn to third-party sources to create and implement a business continuity and disaster recovery policy on their behalf. BC/DR policies are not created equal, because they are made to meet the unique needs, capabilities, and challenges of every organization.
To develop a suitable BC/DR, you must identify the following:
- Scope of the plan
- Critical personnel
- Key business areas
- Dependencies between various business areas and functions
- The acceptable downtime for each critical function
- Ways to maintain operations
From a maintenance standpoint and a general usability stand point, we definitely prefer Axcient Replibit over our previous solution. We like the product and most importantly, the product works when we need it to.
