What are public APIs?
According to Gartner, an application programming interface (API) provides programmatic access to service functionality and data within an application or a database. It can be used as a building block for developing new interactions with humans, other applications, or smart devices. MSPs and third-party integrators use APIs to serve the needs of a digital transformation or ecosystem in a platform business model.
Also known as open APIs, public APIs are available and shared freely to enable speed by eliminating redundancy. Technicians, developers, and engineers with programmatic access to potentially proprietary software or a web service can use or republish data as needed without restriction. Basically, public APIs allow companies to integrate third-party products and insights for a complete view of their protected systems within a single pane of glass.
How do public APIs work with x360Recover?
Axcient is utilizing REST APIs, a popular type of web interface that lets integrators communicate with business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) services. REST APIs can quickly and securely serve MSPs, integrators, and other vendors with protected and confidential data. For example, public APIs let MSPs centralize Axcient and external data on reporting tools to deliver a unified view of all protected systems. Technicians can build on existing APIs to seamlessly integrate an MSP’s BCDR tech stack by pulling information from x360Recover.
Public APIs allow integrators—or third-party vendors—to write their data to x360Recover. That’s why we’re asking both MSPs and integrators to participate in early access now. When we launch public APIs for general availability, we want to be ready to connect MSPs to the vendors they use most.
What is developer.axcient.com?
Developer.axcient.com is a developer network that has been available for access, but it was previously just an open API type file. Now, Axcient has added a full content management system where updates are displayed and easy to understand with more documentation, including screenshots, to help MSPs better access the content. Open API files are still available through the x360recover documentation, but now, there’s also a community code section where you can download code samples and get started a lot faster.
While the network looks similar to how it did before – you still have that open API format, and you’re able to download the YAML file and import that into products – now, there’s a lot of different tooling that allows you to dump open API files into them to generate all of your API calls without having to do a lot of development work. Additionally, Axcient offers a mock URL where techs can test and experiment without creating an environment where you would need to start creating API keys. This allows you to hit the API as often as you want and get repeating information or create demo applications to tie to the mock endpoint. That way, you can provide evidence of things without sharing any data.
Why is Axcient adding public APIs?
Axcient currently offers internal APIs for an internal RMC to pull up protected backup information. With public APIs, MSPs can access a much larger pool of API enablers. The use of public APIs unlocks a new ecosystem for x360Recover users.
It gives technicians the power to write to the product instead of relying on Axcient to complete integrations. MSP partners can use public APIs to enhance their x360Recover instance, while integrators can extend the functionality of x360Recover to their products. These benefits result in productivity through efficiency while revealing new insights for intelligent decision-making across the MSP.
What will it cost me?
Nothing! Public APIs are built into the x360 platform, so there’s no extra charge to use integrations.
Why are public APIs so exciting?
Consolidated efficiency drives today’s top-performing MSPs, ensuring uninterrupted and profitable BCDR services. Because a simple infrastructure is profitable, public APIs are on everyone’s wish list.
- MSP owners can lower operational costs and ensure cybersecurity by building on existing public APIs to integrate their tech stacks seamlessly on a single dashboard.
- MSP technicians can reduce tech debt and control labor costs by reducing manual interventions and the steps required to uncover insights for risk identification, mitigation, and data recovery.
- MSP clients can unify data from external parties on the x360Recover solution for a complete perspective of protected systems and cybersecurity readiness.
- Integrators can enhance their products with x360Recover functionality and surface information via public APIs for PSA, RMM, or document management data.
Who’s integrating with Axcient public APIs?
Axcient and ScalePad have integrated to reduce backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity management. By connecting x360Recover to the Backup Radar tool, MSPs can work faster and more productively, leveraging automation and newly uncovered insights. Through the integration, backup results are collected directly from the Axcient x360Recover platform and displayed in a single pane of glass. With unified monitoring, MSPs can quickly identify high-level backup trends, uncover backup successes, see health status, and report on results for clients.
Key integration benefits

What’s next for public APIs?
As always, Axcient is already working on the next release for this existing feature. Now our billing API is released to allow MSPs to pull usage from all the products in x360 – including x360Cloud and x360Sync in addition to x360Recover. This release comes in response to partners asking for PSA billing that can help automate the reconciliation of contracts or agreements within your PSA. Now, MSPs will have the usage to write the integration and sync it over while allowing other third-party integrators like Gradient MSP to build to the API as well.
What else is on Axcient’s product roadmap?
In 2023, Axcient completed 29 releases containing 106 product enhancements, 127 maintenance and security updates, and seven significant enhancements requiring larger, dedicated projects – all 100% dedicated to solving MSP pain points. Building on those successes, Axcient’s 2024 roadmap is centered around four core areas:
1. Protect Everything™
It’s not just our motto. It’s our purpose. Uninterrupted business continuity and rapid disaster recovery are critical for all systems regardless of a client’s location, size, industry, budget, and environment. MSPs need all-in-one, consolidated, and comprehensive coverage to secure a wide range of client needs and remain competitive in the channel.
MSPs can look forward to NAS protection and Microsoft Teams backup and recovery.
2. Recovery First
To meet SLAs, MSPs need proactive, automated, integrated features that accelerate restoration with painless and proven recovery. A recovery-first mindset prioritizes streamlined disaster recovery procedures as a requirement for business continuity, a strategy for cost control, and a symbol of your commitment to protecting clients.
MSPs can look forward to an enhanced, intuitive user experience leveraging features designed to unify cloud recovery and accelerate PST Export and SharePoint point-in-time restore for x360Cloud.
3. Flexibility
Operational efficiency depends on how much an MSP can do with its stack. Get peace of mind with a single BCDR solution and a stable vendor that expands services, accommodates new needs, and upgrades based on changing cyber threats. Conversely, legacy products are rigid and often grow stale to the market’s current demands. Axcient supports BCDR with multiple deployment options – both with and without an appliance – and we’re not stopping there.
MSPs can look forward to doing more with fewer solutions and vendors using extended distribution to easily fulfill more BCDR use cases without adding management complexity.
4. Usability
Axcient solutions are secure by design, not configuration, with zero-touch deployment, proof of disaster recovery testing, automatic backup integrity testing, and client executive summary reports. These innovations significantly reduce the resources MSP techs require, allowing MSP owners to lower tech team size and skill level demands to drive cost efficiency and profitability. Of course, we continue to seek and implement modern tools for ease of use.
MSPs can look forward to geo-redundancy replication, PSA billing integration, and further development of our REST APIs.
